Christmas photoshoot in Paris 2026: dates, places and the best time of day

The Christmas window for a photoshoot in Paris in 2026 runs from Sunday, November 22, when the Champs-Élysées lights are announced to switch on, to early January. Inside it, pick one of two hours: about 30 to 45 minutes after sunrise, which in December means meeting around 9 am, or the last stretch of daylight, roughly 4:30 to 5:30 pm, when the lights glow against a sky that still has some color. Midday works too, but it is the busiest and flattest part of a December day.

Most Christmas photo lists give you places without dates, and dates without the one thing that decides your photos: how little daylight Paris has in December. So this guide starts with the 2026 calendar and the real sunrise and sunset times, then shows what Christmas actually looks like in my own winter couple sessions.

When are the Christmas lights in Paris in 2026?

Here is what has been announced for the 2026 season. Dates can still move, so check them again the week before you fly.

  • Champs-Élysées illuminations: announced for Sunday, November 22, 2026, until early January 2027. They are lit from nightfall to midnight, and all night on December 24 and 31.
  • Champs-Élysées Christmas market, at the Concorde end of the avenue: November 22, 2026 to January 4, 2027.
  • Notre-Dame Christmas market, in square René-Viviani on the Left Bank: November 26 to December 27, 2026.
  • Ice rink on the roof of Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, with a view of the Eiffel Tower: November 24, 2026 to January 3, 2027.
  • Tuileries Christmas market, La Magie de Noël: November 14, 2026 to January 3, 2027.

One detail for Americans: the Champs-Élysées switch-on falls on the Sunday before Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26). If you fly in for the long weekend, the lights are already up.

Now the numbers that matter more for photos. In December, Paris gets dark early:

  • December 1: sunrise around 8:20 am, sunset around 5:00 pm
  • December 15: sunrise around 8:35 am, sunset around 4:55 pm
  • December 21: sunrise around 8:40 am, sunset around 4:55 pm

By about 5:30 pm, the last of the twilight is gone. So the "Christmas lights" moment isn't a late-night outing. It happens at the hour most of us still call late afternoon.

Morning or dusk: what time of day works for Christmas photos?

Both work, for different reasons, and they don't give you the same pictures.

Dusk, if you want the lights

Between about 4:30 and 5:30 pm, the sky turns blue, the street lights and garlands come on, and for a short while you get both: faces still lit by what remains of the day, and lights glowing behind you. In December that window is short. Once the sky goes black, the garlands are the only light left, and the photos change completely.

My advice is to start in daylight and keep the blue half hour for the end, not the beginning. You arrive relaxed, we've already found our rhythm, and the lights become the finale.

Don't expect the Champs-Élysées to yourselves at that hour. It is one of the busiest streets in Paris from mid-morning on, and the illuminations draw their own crowd. When the avenue is too full, I prefer the Petit Palais garden and the Grand Palais area nearby, which are much calmer. I explain more on my Champs-Élysées photoshoot page.

One practical note: late afternoon in December is also rush hour. Between two spots, I tend to prefer a taxi to an Uber at that time, because taxis can use the bus lanes.

Morning, if you want a quiet city

The other option is the one I recommend all year: about 30 to 45 minutes after sunrise. In December, that puts us around 9 am, the most forgiving sunrise of the year for anyone with jet lag. No 5 am alarm. The Tuileries open at 7:30 am in winter and the Palais Royal garden at 8 am, so both are already open when the light arrives.

Winter is often overlooked, and I think that's a mistake: misty mornings and soft light can make it the most romantic season of all. What you give up in the morning is the illuminations, since they only run after nightfall. What you keep is everything that looks festive in daylight, which brings me to where.

Where do Christmas photos actually look festive in daylight?

A lot of Christmas inspiration from Paris is shot at night. The photos in this article come from real winter sessions, and none of them relies on the illuminations, so you can see what December looks like before the city lights up.

The carousel at the Trocadéro

One of my winter sessions started at a metro entrance, crossed the Trocadéro gardens facing the Eiffel Tower and stopped in front of the carousel. That season it had a Santa, a small Christmas tree and rows of warm bulbs that stayed on under a gray, pinkish sky. It's the most "Christmas in Paris" frame I have, and there isn't a single night shot in it.

Two honest caveats. I can't promise the carousel will be decorated the same way in 2026. And the place was not empty: you can see other visitors behind the couple in the first photo of this article. The Trocadéro is a lovely spot for a winter couple session anyway, though I don't recommend it for a proposal, and I cover it in detail on my Trocadéro photoshoot page.

Wooden chalets

At the metro entrance where that same session began, you can see a row of wooden chalets with green roofs and lights just behind the couple. I can't tell you which market they belonged to, or whether it will be back in 2026. Chalets like these are a gift in December because they look decorated all day long, not only after dark.

If you want chalets in your photos this year, you have three markets to choose from: the Tuileries, the Champs-Élysées market at the Concorde end of the avenue, and the Notre-Dame market in square René-Viviani, across the river from the cathedral.

String lights, shop windows and lanterns

With Newman and Tathiana, we left the Rue de Rivoli arcades for a side street with red awnings, a row of Vélib' city bikes and strings of small lights running down a facade. I can't tell you whether those lights were there for Christmas. They did the job, and the bikes became the props.

Mell and Weber's winter walk stayed close to the Seine, with Notre-Dame behind them at one point. The pavement was wet the whole time, and that helped: wet stone reflects every lit window. The two frames from that day I'd show you for a December mood are a bookshop window glowing warm behind them and an awning hung with lanterns.

That is what I look for in December: warm light that is already there. A café window, a bookshop, a lamp under an awning. On a gray day, it lights your faces far better than a garland ever will. If you'd like spots that work in every season, I've listed them in my 10 best couple photo spots in Paris.

What is the weather like for a December photoshoot?

December in Paris averages a high of 46°F (8°C) and a low of 39°F (4°C). It is also the month with the most rainy days, about 11 on average, and the darkest one, with roughly 57 hours of sunshine in the whole month. Gray skies are normal.

I don't mind them. Gray light is soft on faces, and wet streets give you reflections. Rain has its own romance here, with shining cobblestones and shots under one umbrella. If the conditions are severe enough to spoil the session or put my gear at risk, we reschedule.

The real question in December is what to wear, because your coats become your outfit. Look at the photos above: a burgundy wool coat with a long black scarf, a herringbone coat next to a camel one, a leopard scarf over a pink sweater. Color and texture in the coat do the work that a summer dress would do in June. Bring gloves for between shots, and take them off for the close-ups.

After you book, I send you a client guide with what-to-wear recommendations, and I've also written a guide on how to prepare for your couple photoshoot in Paris.

How early should you book a December session?

At least 2 to 3 weeks ahead, as for the rest of the year, and earlier if you want a specific date around the holidays. If your date is December 24, 25 or 31, write to me before you build the rest of your trip around it.

Booking is simple. Send me your dates through the contact form or on WhatsApp, and I reply within 24 to 48 hours. The first email consultation is free, with zero obligation. A €100 deposit secures your date, and the balance is due on the day of the shoot. My couple photoshoot packages run from €350 for 1 hour (30+ photos) to €550 for 2 hours (70+ photos).

If you want the photos for holiday cards, count backward. Your gallery arrives within 3 weeks of the session, so a session on December 1 means photos by about December 22. That works for digital greetings or New Year's cards. For printed Christmas cards, book in November instead.

FAQ

When and where will the Christmas lights be displayed in Paris in 2026?

On the Champs-Élysées, from Sunday, November 22 (announced date) until early January. For photos, the useful slot is the blue half hour, roughly 4:30 to 5:30 pm in December.

Where can we take cute Christmas pictures in Paris?

In daylight, look for decorations that don't depend on darkness: carousels, market chalets, lit shop windows and lanterns. At dusk, between about 4:30 and 5:30 pm in December, the Champs-Élysées and the calmer Petit Palais garden next to it are the classic choices.

Is it a good idea to visit Paris in December?

For photos, yes, if you accept short days and probable gray skies. The sun rises around 8:30 am and sets around 5 pm, so a sunrise session doesn't require an early alarm, and the lights come on before dinner. Pack for about 39 to 46°F and some rain.

What should we wear for a winter photoshoot in Paris?

Think of the coat first and build the rest around it. Two coats that go together without matching exactly, no big logos, and boots you can walk in on cobblestones. My client guide goes into more detail after you book.

Do you shoot in the rain in December?

Yes, and a drizzle is no reason to cancel: wet pavement is what makes the lit windows reflect. Only a real storm, or weather bad enough to damage my camera, moves the session to another day.
