Proposing in Paris at Christmas or on New Year's Eve: a realistic plan

The best time for a marriage proposal in Paris in December is the morning, not midnight. In late December the sun comes up around 8:40 am, after both the Tuileries and the Palais Royal garden have opened, so you can propose in a calm garden around 9:15 am without setting an alarm for 6. The lights, the markets and the New Year's Eve crowds all belong to the evening: enjoy them afterward, as an engaged couple.
This is the plan I'd give a friend who wanted to propose here over the holidays. It covers the hours, the places, what December 31 actually looks like in Paris, and one real winter proposal, photographed from the first knee to the last portrait.
Is December a good time for a marriage proposal in Paris?
Yes, as long as you plan for short days. Here is what December gives you, and what it takes away:
- A late, easy sunrise. A sunrise proposal in December starts at a time you'd get up anyway (exact times in the next section).
- Short days. Around the winter solstice, Paris has a little more than eight hours of daylight.
- Cold, often gray weather. Expect highs around 46°F (8°C), lows around 39°F (4°C), and rain on roughly one day in three. My Christmas photoshoot guide covers the winter light in more detail.
- Holiday dates that fall well in 2026. Christmas Day is a Friday, and so is New Year's Day, which gives you two long weekends.
- Lights in the evening. The Champs-Élysées illuminations and the Christmas markets are up from late November; the same guide has the 2026 dates.
What time should a December proposal happen?
I'd aim for a moment between 30 and 45 minutes after sunrise. In December, that's late enough for the gardens to be open and early enough that the paths are still yours, with low winter light coming in sideways. That gives you:
- Early December: sunrise around 8:20 am, proposal around 8:50 to 9:05 am
- Around Christmas: sunrise around 8:40 am, proposal around 9:10 to 9:25 am
- January 1: sunrise around 8:45 am, proposal around 9:15 to 9:30 am
That's the beauty of a winter proposal here. In June, the sun rises around 5:45 am. In December, you can have breakfast first, or at least a coffee.
Sunset, around 4:55 to 5:05 pm, is lovely too, and that's when the lights come on. But expect more people around you, especially near anything decorated. If the lights matter to you, my suggestion is to propose in the morning and keep the lights for the evening, when the pressure is off.
Where to propose in Paris at Christmas (and where the crowds are)
My two favorite proposal spots don't change in winter: the Palais Royal and the Tuileries Garden.
The Palais Royal garden opens at 8 am in winter, before the December sunrise. On a winter morning it's about as close to a private garden as central Paris gets, and its covered arcades are right there if it rains. The Tuileries open at 7:30 am in winter, and when the air is clear the Eiffel Tower shows at the far end of the view, exactly as in the story below. They are about five minutes' walk from each other, so one can be the proposal and the other the celebration walk.
The Tuileries also host a Christmas market, La Magie de Noël, from November 14, 2026 to January 3, 2027. I take it into account when we choose your exact corner.
Where the crowds are in December:
- The Champs-Élysées, for the lights and the Christmas market at the Concorde end (November 22 to January 4). Beautiful for a walk together after the yes. Not where I'd want you to kneel.
- The Notre-Dame Christmas market, in square René-Viviani (November 26 to December 27). Better for a stroll than for a proposal.
- The Trocadéro. The famous view of the tower draws people from first light. Lovely for photos as a couple, but I don't send anyone there to kneel.
What really happens in Paris on New Year's Eve?
Less than the movies suggest. As I write this, the official program for December 31, 2026 hasn't been published. The usual format is on the Champs-Élysées, with a video show on the Arc de Triomphe and fireworks. The concert planned there for 2025 was canceled for security reasons, and as a rule there are no fireworks from the Eiffel Tower itself.
So a midnight proposal on December 31 means a big crowd on the Champs-Élysées, in the dark and the cold. It can be a happy, noisy memory. It's rarely an intimate one.
What I'd suggest instead: propose on the morning of the 31st in a quiet garden, have a long lunch, and go see the lights that night with the ring on. You get the celebration without having to share the most important minute of the trip with half of Paris. If December 31 or January 1 is your date, write to me early so we can check it together.
A real winter proposal: Tuileries, Louvre and Palais Royal
Alec and Heather's gallery shows what a Paris proposal looks like in winter. Here is how it unfolds in the photos.
The spot. A terrace in the Tuileries, beside a tall stone urn on its pedestal and an old lamppost, with the Eiffel Tower small on the horizon. The trees are bare. A few people walk past in the background, and one cyclist. The garden is not empty, and it doesn't need to be.
The knee. Alec goes down on one knee and holds out the ring box.

The hug. Right after, they hold each other at the foot of the urn. Then, standing face to face, Alec holds the open ring box between them.

The walk. The session carries on through the Tuileries: clipped hedges, a big bare tree to lean on, the tower far behind.

The Louvre. Next, they're in the Louvre courtyard, with a low winter sun flaring behind the palace. That low sun is a December gift: it stays close to the horizon, so the light is warm and golden for longer than you'd think.

The Palais Royal. By the time they reach the Buren columns, Alec has put on a beanie too, and they're laughing.

The last frames. Under the Palais Royal colonnade, Heather walks toward the camera, smiling, Alec a step behind, holding her hand.

Tuileries, Louvre, Palais Royal: this route works beautifully in winter. It's compact, it's beautiful in gray light as well as in sun, and if it starts to rain, the arcades of the Rue de Rivoli and the Palais Royal are never far. To keep it a surprise, you have two options: an announced couple photoshoot, with the proposal during the session, or you say nothing and ask me to take a photo with your phone, as if I were a passer-by. My step-by-step guide to planning a surprise proposal in Paris explains both.
What to plan for the cold and the rain
Plan for coat weather, and for a fair chance of rain. Then stop worrying about it. A winter drizzle doesn't cancel anything: the Palais Royal arcades and the Rue de Rivoli arcades give us cover a few steps from the gardens, and an umbrella in the frame is rather romantic. If a real storm hits, we move to another morning, and that costs you nothing extra.
A few winter details that make a difference on the day:
- The ring box hides well in a coat. A long winter coat is far more forgiving than summer clothes. Use an inside pocket if you have one.
- Take your gloves off before you kneel. The ring needs a bare hand, and so do the close-ups.
- Choose warm, simple layers. Look at Alec and Heather: wool coats, a big scarf, beanies. Nothing fancy, and it photographs beautifully.
- Plan the warm-up. Know where you'll go for a hot drink once the session is over.
FAQ
Can we propose on Christmas morning?
On paper, it's a good slot: December 25, 2026 is a Friday, and the sun rises around 8:40 am, so you'd kneel around 9:15. Two things have to be checked first, the gardens' holiday opening hours (the same goes for January 1) and my availability that morning, so write to me as early as you can if that's your date.
What is the best time of day for a proposal in Paris in December?
The best time for a December proposal in Paris is between about 8:50 and 9:30 am, depending on the date. Both the Tuileries and the Palais Royal garden are open by then.
Can I propose on New Year's Eve at midnight?
You can, but expect a big crowd, especially on the Champs-Élysées, and darkness. For an intimate proposal with photos, the morning of December 31 or January 1 is a better bet. Then you go and see the lights that night, already engaged.
Is it too late to book a December proposal?
Count at least 2 to 3 weeks, and more if you have your heart set on December 24, 25 or 31. Booked a last-minute trip? Send me a message all the same, the morning you want may still be open. My proposal packages start at €450 for 1 hour.
